Best Western Ballarat

As Australians, we are truly blessed to have such a vast spectrum of engaging holiday destinations right in our very own backyard – from pristine beaches and sweeping mountain ranges, to bustling metropolises and serene camping grounds. A valid argument can be made that we too often look to far-off overseas getaway locales when we have everything we could possibly need right here.

There’s perhaps no better example than the beguiling country town of Ballarat – a scenic melting pot of boutique wineries, inviting eateries and exciting activities that present visitors with an endless array of adventure and entertainment.

Whether you’re seeking a romantic rural escape for two, or an action-packed holiday for the whole family to enjoy; you can do it all and so much more. And there’s no better place to stay than at the BEST WESTERN PLUS Ballarat Suites – a welcoming accommodation establishment that puts the very best of Ballarat right at your fingertips.

The Hotel

Our Travel Team couldn’t wait to get reacquainted with this irresistible pastoral paradise, so we set off on a leisurely 90-minute drive along the Western Highway and arrived at our destination eager to explore one of country Victoria’s most breathtaking regions.

Providing plush accommodation in 26 modern suites, the BEST WESTERN PLUS Ballarat Suites is centrally located just five minutes away from the heart of Ballarat’s CBD. The 4.5 star property was awarded with a 2014 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and boasts an incredible 93% approval rating with a plethora of positive independent reviews.

Our group was immediately charmed by the building’s cheery red-brick façade, and after parking the car (free on-site spots for all guests!) we headed off to check-in.

The Rooms

Our King Executive Suite was beautifully-appointed and featured all the mod-cons expected from a 4.5 star venue including a plush king-size bed, flat-screen TV with Foxtel, air-conditioning, mini-bar and a handy work desk.

The open-plan layout offered plenty of space to unwind, while the ensuite bathroom added a touch of luxury with a huge double shower paired with his and her vanities.

We also indulged by spending a night in one of these stunning King Spa Suites which comprised a separate living area and an ensuite bathroom complete with lavish Japanese plunge spa.

After unpacking the suitcases and cracking open the complimentary bottle of wine we kindly received on arrival to help us settle in, our travelling troupe set out to explore the historical city around us.

Sovereign Hill

BEST WESTERN PLUS Ballarat Suites stands directly opposite one of Victoria’s most iconic and best-loved tourist destinations – Sovereign Hill. A living breathing museum that resurrects the glory days of Australia’s vaunted Gold Rush era with a unique blend of historical significance, resident cast bedecked in period-accurate costumes and surroundings that invoke memories of the Eureka Stockade.

Best Western Ballarat

Set on 25 acres of an original mining site, Sovereign Hill invites visitors to experience what life was like in Ballarat during the 1850s amid the height of the gold rush days.

Best Western Ballarat

The sprawling property has been transformed into a traditional goldfields town complete with shops, hotels, a theatre, schools, factories, and even winding underground mines to explore.

Best Western Ballarat

There’s plenty of fun to be had on-site from learning how to make traditional sweets and watching entertaining live shows, to panning for gold – who knows, you may just find a glimmering fortune in these waters!

Best Western Ballarat

One of Sovereign Hill’s must-try experiences is the extraordinary Blood on the Southern Cross show. This explosive multi-million dollar sound-and-light spectacle recounts the famed tale of the Eureka Rebellion – a violent battle that raged between gold miners and the Government back in 1854.

The evening’s show-stopping pinnacle centres upon a daring stunt that re-enacts the dramatic burning of the Eureka Hotel – spine-tingling stuff to witness!

Ballarat Wildlife Park

The Best Western is also mere moments away from the famous Ballarat Wildlife Park. Home to hundreds of native animals ranging from sleepy koalas and bounding kangaroos, to strutting emus and calculating crocs plus many more furry and feathered friends!

Best Western Ballarat

One of the best parts of our visit to the Ballarat Wildlife Park was the ‘Animal Experience’, where we got the opportunity to meet the park’s most famous resident, Pat The Wombat – voted the 3rd Best City Mascot in The World by CNN!

Best Western Ballarat

Enjoy watching live animals shows, head off for a guided tour of the rambling park, or take some time to meet the park rangers. There’s also a fully-licensed café and souvenir shop where you can pick up lots of cool stuff to take back home with you.

Local Delights

Aside from the two big attractions, there’s plenty more to see and do during your Ballarat escape.

Best Western Ballarat

Feel free to take a stroll down the town’s main arterial of Lydiard Street – pick up a handy guidebook at the information centre and stroll along the thoroughfare while gazing at the intricate historical architecture and quaint storefronts.

Best Western Ballarat

We were also gifted with a complimentary Showbag on behalf of Ballarat Tourism and Best Western Plus that was absolutely bursting with unbeatable value and top-dollar discounts on an assortment of local experiences.

Best Western Ballarat

The jam-packed goodie-bag offered something for everyone, from the mysterious hidden passages of the Tangled Maze, to the refined surrounds of a sophisticated high tea experience at Craig’s Royal Hotel.

Best Western Ballarat

Our group also took some time to visit iconic Ballarat landmarks including paying our respects at the War Memorial – a solemn yet eye-opening and deeply rewarding experience.

Best Western Ballarat

We then put our feet up by relaxing beside the shores of Lake Wendouree, a site made famous at the 1956 Summer Olympics. The lake is great for active travellers and provides a picturesque backdrop to enjoy a walk, bike ride, or even rowing and fishing.

Best Western Ballarat

We even managed to squeeze in some cosmic fun at the Ballarat Municipal Observatory & Museum – ideally situated at Mount Pleasant, the observatory has over a century of history and offers intriguing insights to the mysteries of space with entertaining 3D movies and educational displays.

Ballarat

We finished our brilliant Ballarat jaunt in style at the city’s flourishing Botanical Gardens, a verdant 40-acre haven that has historical roots dating back to 1858 – simply an idyllic spot to while away a sunny afternoon.
