The Resort

The Heron Island Resort is one of the country’s most popular getaway locales – a status underscored by an impressive array of awards including a 2014 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

The on-site accommodation encompasses the comfy to the extravagant – from cosy resort-style rooms, to expansive suites and even a top-of-the-range standalone luxury beach house.

After disembarking from our cruise ship transfer eager to explore the pristine playground splayed at our fingertips, our group received a warm welcome at the check-in desk and we were promptly shown to our rooms.

The Rooms

We were allocated a Turtle Room for our stay, featuring creature comforts like a plush queen-size bed, a well-appointed ensuite bathroom, handy tea and coffee-making facilities, and a private deck that looks out across the tropical gardens.

Heron Island

We also indulged in an upgrade and spent a few nights in one of the property’s Reef Rooms – offering more space with a relaxed lounge area and a private balcony that grants glimpses of the ocean beyond.

Island Dining

Despite being island-bound, we certainly didn’t eat like shipwrecked castaways! We tucked into scrumptious daily breakfasts each morning of our stay, with fully-cooked and continental options to satisfy any palate.

Heron Island

The Shearwater Restaurant, affectionately named in honour of the island’s resident native mutton-birds, also served up satiating modern Australian cuisine for lunch and dinner.

Heron Island

All the food is impressive, but it goes without saying that the seafood dishes are absolute standouts. Do yourself a favour and try the share-style seafood platter – it’s a sure-fire winner dotted with the freshest local catch!

The island is also off-limits to pesky day-trippers, so you can kickback on the beach without worrying about fighting for your patch of sand.

An array of off-site adventures are additionally at your disposal with Great Barrier Reef tours and sightseeing cruises able to be booked.

TripAdvisor Reviews:

‘One of my favourite vacation spots of all time!’

Five out of five stars – Reviewed 4 March 2015

“Heron Island is a remarkable place with a lovely resort. The island is home to loggerhead and green turtles, all kinds of shorebirds, and its waters have fish, live coral, enormous manta, eagle, and other types of rays; and a host of sharks. It’s the best snorkelling ever, anywhere. The resort is squeaky clean (hard to do in a national park with so many shorebirds) and the rooms are generously sized. The food is good, and the staff is amiable. The dive shack staff is wonderful. Don’t come here to watch TV, there isn’t any, or to do work or make calls on your phone (you can’t). Plan on sunset walks to watch turtles hatching, and rays chase each other around the waters by the jetty.”

‘Heron Island Magic’

Five out of five stars – Reviewed 16 February 2015

“Heron Island is one of the jewels in the Great Barrier Reef. In 30 minutes we snorkeled with a school of 30 eagle rays, a pair of sickle-fin lemon sharks, numerous blacktip reef sharks, countless other rays, Green and Hawksbill turtles in an azure blue coral scape, and all that before breakfast. With turtles and birds nesting everywhere it is impossible not to be drawn into the majesty of this environment. Having a resort look after you and lay everything on just meant the experience was as easy and relaxing as it is truly wonderous. Often in life you pay for what you get; in the case of Heron Island it is a price worth paying again and again.”

‘Heaven is Heron Island!’

Five out of five stars – Reviewed 10 February 2015

“The word beauty was created here on this island. Simply the most picturesque place. You will discover an abundance of birds and underwater life that will make your never ending smile beam from ear to ear. From the moment we walked on the jetty on arrival we saw black tipped reef sharks, rays, shoals of brightly coloured fish to rare birds flying overhead. Early morning walks to see turtles lay their eggs and swim back into the sea was an awesome experience. The inner reef and outer reef snorkelling and swimming was not to be missed. We were fortunate not only to swim with sharks, turtles and fish but we saw manta rays in the ocean…… a life time of memories and experiences were made in only 3 days. The accommodation was lovely, simple and more than adequate. A location that we were privileged to visit. Paradise is Heron Island.”
