Peppers York Cove Tamar Valley: A Wine Country Paradise

Beautiful Scenery

Our latest deal is for four days/ three nights for two adults at Peppers York Cove Tamar Valley, a resort that is ideally located for both adventure and relaxation, and is VERY serious about good food and wine.

Peppers York Cove is located in George Town, on the north coast of Tasmania, just a 30 minute drive from Launceston. The resort is plotted serenely on the shores of the Tamar River, right where the river empties into the sea. The view of the large river and background hills is amazing, and this diverse and stunning setting is what draws many travellers to the region.

What also draws travellers to the region is cool-climate wine growing that’s done in the area. Some of Tasmania’s most renowned wines come from small, family owned vineyards here, not to mention other fresh produce from local farms in the area including berries and cheese.

Then there’s the Low Head Beaches. Those seeking sun will enjoy a visit to East Beach on the Bass Strait or Lagoon Bay on the estuary. There are picnic areas with barbecues — great for familes — and even penguin tours, a Platypus House where you can watch the funny little animals play, and a Seahorse World with a wide collection of live indigenous seahorses.

History buffs are not left out in George Town. Visit the Low Head Pilot Station Not only is the compound historic — the oldest group of pilot buildings in Australia. The compound has been helping boaters navigate into the Tamar River since 1805, and is still in use today. There’s a museum on site that explains the history of the buildings and also of the area’s whaling and sealing history, nearby shipwrecks and more.  The iconic red and white striped lighthouse also makes a great photo opp.

After a long day of exploring the area, Peppers is the perfect place to retire. Rooms here are all modern and bright. Guests will stay in a Deluxe Hotel Room, shown here, with a huge king bed and a spacious bathroom with separate bath and shower.

Or, if you choose an upgraded package, you’ll enjoy a one-bedroom apartment with sweeping views of the Tamar River. The apartments at Peppers have full kitchens, open plan living space, ensuite bathrooms, internal laundry facilities (which we couldn’t believe!) and great outdoor balconies. We loved being able to return to the apartment and have a separate living space to relax between dinner and bed, and being able to gaze over the river first thing in the morning.

Those who are here for a relaxing escape will be happy to know that Peppers has a great outdoor pool and spa, also overlooking green grass and the river. This is a great place to spend a few hours before or after a drive into the country, or to take a dip to wash off the heat of the day before dinner.

There’s also a gym on site, stocked with machines and free weights and never crowded.

Now we get down to the serious stuff — the food. The Peppers chain of resorts, hotels and retreats certainly puts a much deserved emphasis on meal time, and they really do know how to please. Not only is the York Cove branch in close proximity to some of the best wineries and dining venues in town, but the self-rated 4.5 star resort also boasts an award-winning in-house restaurant for guests to enjoy.

We were immediately impressed with the menu at Cove Restaurant and Bar, and overwhelmed. It’s hard to choose off of the modern Australian cuisine menu, but when you do choose, know that there is the perfect wine pairing suggestion just waiting for you to say “yes.” Fresh local produce is used as much as possible, and this is a great place to sample award winning wines from the region.

We also loved having the chance to sit outside on the banks of the river. The view of sailboats coming in after a day at sea and gently flowing tides was just so picturesque — it might even be hard to focus on your food.  A daily cooked breakfast (included in your package,) is also served here.

‘Fantastic, no need to add more’

Five out of five stars – Reviewed 18 April 2015

“We spent only one night, but that night was in a very spacious, comfortable, clean neat, well fitted out, with a beautiful view one bedroom unit. The king bed was so comfortable, the room enormous, nicely decorated with a very spacious also fitted out en-suite. The kitchen, lounge, bedroom, en-suite and dining room were all spacious. From our arrival to meeting the very efficient reception lady, who had me laughing, we loved this place. If you’re staying in George Town it would be incredibly hard to go past this place, well it would be impossible in my opinion.”

“I recently stayed here for couple nights and I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality large rooms with beautiful views. The staff were amazing and very helpful with sightseeing suggestions. The onsite restaurant offers fantastic local food and wine. I highly recommend the scotch fillet… wow it’s memorable. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely return.”

‘Top class apartment’

“Ultra-modern apartment with everything you can think of in it. Great view of the water. Very new looking on the inside, furnishings in leather and full blown two door fridge in the kitchen. A few minutes’ drive from the city centre. If you are touring the Tamar Valley wineries this is a great jumping off point. One the best places we stayed at in Tassie.”
