Mai Khao Lak: Peace and Quiet on the Andaman

Welcome to the Cudo Travel Blog, where you can read first hand reports from our expert team of travel consultants, jam-packed with photos and real accounts. The blog has been prepared by travel experts who have visited the hotel.

Mai Khao Lak

We’re really excited to bring you our latest Khao Lak deal, at the Mai Khao Lak Beach Resort and Spa. This stunning resort is beautifully appointed and situated perfectly on Khao Lak’s calm coast, just about an hour’s drive north of Phuket International Airport. A convenient airport pick-up is included in the deal, so guests will be able to relax as soon as they arrive in Bali.

Upon arriving in the lobby, we realized that we really were in for a special holiday. Modern decor combined with cool blue tones and wooden accents sets the theme for the rest of the resort – and matches the color of the Andaman Sea almost perfectly.

The Deluxe Suite Room included in the deal really leaves nothing to be desired. The rooms are beautifully decorated in the colors that mimic the sand and water just a few steps away. There’s a great separate living area where you can relax without having to get in bed, or that makes a great sleeping area if you’re travelling with kids. There’s a great view of the beautiful pool and sea through huge windows in the room, and tons of light during the day.

We don’t anticipate that most guests will spend much time in the room, though, because Mai’s most excellent offerings include their beckoning lagoon pool and stunning stretch of beach.

The pool itself is expansive and stretches around the front of the resort. There are tons of palms and green space, and many lounge chairs to go around. There’s an awesome bar located IN THE POOL, so you really won’t even have to step out of the water to quench your thirst or satisfy your craving for a snack. There is access to the bar outside of the pool too, though, for those who aren’t water bugs!

It’s definitely important to get out of the pool for a few minutes, though, to take advantage of the gorgeous shoreline in front of the resort. The beaches of Khao Lak are known for being just as beautiful as those in Phuket (nicer, in our opinion!) but for having less of the annoying crowds and overwhelming vendors. Not to mention the throngs of beach chairs that you have to navigate through to get to the water’s edge in Patong. You’ll certainly be able to get some peace and quiet here, but you don’t need to feel like you’re stuck at the resort. There are areas of beach with laid back restaurants and massage beds.

If you’re travelling with kids, you’ll definitely feel comfortable at Mai. There’s a separate kids’ pool that’s super shallow, and there’s a modern kids’ club too, so you can have a few minutes to sneak away to get a massage. There are also activities for everyone to enjoy, like yoga, water polo, beach volleyball and tennis courts.

The spa at Mai, Mind Spa, is candlelit and offers private rooms for singles or couples, with steam rooms and spa baths. We became pretty obsessed with their after sun treatments, like the After Sun Aroma Massage, and the After Sun Feather Treatment, for obvious reasons. We also enjoyed a good exfoliation — who doesn’t like to be scrubbed down with coffee, honey seed or aromatic salt?

If you feel like you’ve been laying around too much, don’t worry — there’s a fully equipped gym at Mai for your unlimited use.

When it comes to meal time, Mai offers a few different options so guests don’t get sick of the same scenery. (How could you? It’s gorgeous.) An international buffet breakfast is offered at The Mangrove, a modern, open air room with seating indoors and out. All of the buffets at Mai include a kids’ section, so menu meltdown will not be on the itinerary on this holiday.

The Mangrove also serves an a la carte lunch and a themed buffet dinner. There’s high ceilings and tons of light — it really is the perfect place to start the day. Guests of Cudo will receive a daily buffet breakfast here, as well as a “Taste of Thailand” or Themed Buffet Dinner for two.

The Meal, a smaller spot, is designed for quick meals and snacks through the day. There are international and Thai dishes on offer, and all of the coffees and cakes you might expect in a good cafe.

At The Sunset, just a few meters away from the beach, guests can enjoy drinks and tapas on the rooftop terrace with sofas and cabanas, or a beautiful poolside meal. It’s so close to the beach, and this smaller pool has less action than the main pool, so this is a nice and quiet spot for a meal. Not to mention the view. Guests will enjoy a romantic three course seafood dinner here, for two.

We liked to start our evening off with a drink at the Beach Club, though. We’re talking tables directly on the sand, under palms. What a great place to watch the sun set at the end of a relaxing day. The Beach Club offers great drinks and our favorite — barbecued seafood. Seafood barbecues are a thing in Thailand, and Mai certainly knows how to get a good one going.

Mai Khao Lak

No matter where you eat and drink at Mai, you’re certain to have an amazing experience. We liked to soak up the vibe at The Sunset after dark, just before retiring for the night.

Mai Khao Lak

Besides being at the resort, Khao Lak offers lots of shopping and independent restaurants for tourists, especially in the main town, Bang La On. Mai has some great food but we know that it’s nice to get away from the resort for a night or two. Some of our favorite restaurants in the area include Enzo Bistro Fusion Japanese, O’Rendez-vous for delicious Thai, and Blue Mist on the beach for great seafood and curries.

The Mai Khao Lak Beach Resort & Spa is a true Thai paradise, do yourself a favour and check-in to check it out!

“Exceptional Customer Service”
5 of 5 stars
“We stayed at this resort back in 2014. I have to say it had the greatest service I’ve ever experienced, and we have stayed in some amazing places! We stayed for 5 nights in ocean view. Nice rooms .Great bathroom. Can’t fault anything. The buffet breakfasts were the best I’ve had. All my dining experiences were wonderful – great food choices and amazing service. I hated to leave, but can’t wait to return. This is the ultimate fine resort!”

“Paradise”
5 of 5 stars
“Spent 10 nights at Mai Khao Lak and we experienced paradise. The hospitality and quality of service we experienced in was simply superb with each person going out of his/her way to make us comfortable. We had tremendous privacy and could do our own thing, whenever we wanted. The facilities were outstanding starting with the accommodation at the pool villas where we stayed and was kept extremely clean and restocked with coffee and water, What in our minds set Mai Khao Lak apart from many other luxury resorts is Class, and you can’t teach or buy Class. From the honesty of the villa housekeepers and cleaners and who made us comfortable leaving our cameras, wallets, iPads in the open, to the knowledge of the various staff and even the waiters who could explain and took the trouble to answer my queries on the Andaman Sea and the culture, the characteristics, local people; This Class is the personal care the staff took upon themselves to make the guest feel at home, safe, and comfortable. Definitely a return visit location hopefully in the near future. Thanks everyone.”
