Heading to a sandy strip of beach just north of Phuket, we prepared ourselves for an exciting eight night getaway at the Pullman Khao Lak Katiliya Resort & Villas.

What differentiates Khao Lak from neighbouring tourist destinations like Phuket, are its up-scale, secluded coastal resorts and uncrowded beaches. The region is incredibly down to earth both figuratively and literally with buildings unable to exceed the height of coconut palm trees. It’s the ideal getaway for couples looking for a relaxing vacation and also fantastic for families, especially with younger children.

The Resort

Pullman Khao Lak Katiliya Resort & Villas is nestled in a secluded bit of paradise sandwiched between lush tropical forests and 13 kilometres of pristine beach. We travelled the 70-odd minutes from Phuket International Airport in the comfort of our pre-arranged VIP airport pick up and arrived in five star style, fully prepared for an indulgent holiday.

 The Rooms

Check-in was a quick and professional experience, with extremely polite and helpful staff the whole way through.

In the name of unbiased research, we arranged to spend our nights in a delightful Deluxe Room, and an upgraded Katiliya Pool Villa (with a couple of midnight snoozes on the beach for good measure) over our eight night stay.

The soothing earth tones and the rich brown furniture of each room paired effortlessly with the elegant silk fabrics and plush bed linens. The rich hues and varying textures enriched the brilliant views – be it of the sparkling pool, serene lagoon or the secluded intimacy of your very own private garden pool.

Quick tip – if you’d like even more space, upgrade to an extravagant Katiliya Garden Pool Villa which boasts a whopping 80sqm floor-plan!

Poolside Bliss

You’re not officially on holiday until you’re lying horizontally on a sun bed with some form of tropical drink or other in hand – with three fresh-water pools, you definitely won’t have to waste any time getting into ‘vacation mode’.

The extremely large lagoon-style pool with commanding views of the Andaman Sea and its wonderful poolside bar make for the perfect area to enjoy the sun, water and a few nibblies. Guests can also splash around the pleasant family and kid’s pool as well as the adults only pool and spa.

Switch off your brain,  let yourself relax and if checking work email crosses your mind as you lounge about in all your glory, feel free to give your phone a few swimming lessons.

Elegant Dining

Pull up a chair at any one of the seven onsite restaurants and you will not be disappointed – prepare for the flavour explosion of expertly prepared cuisine and incredibly fresh ingredients.

Everyone loves variety and unless you are planning to spend the next five years consecutively at Pullman Khao Lak, we can confidently report that the expansive range of dining options will keep you engaged and intrigued all holiday long.

The Baan Thai restaurant will deliver a healthy dose of authentic Thai cuisine that will inspire both your eyes and your palate . In addition, the lushly green surrounds and serene lagoon will work to create an incredibly dreamy setting whereby one can enjoy top notch Thai dishes with a serve of peace and tranquillity.

Guests travelling to Pullman Khao Lak will need to expand their definition of a spa treatment room – imagine yourself in an expansive 115sqm room that rivals the size of many city apartments.

Excluding the therapists, the space is completely yours to relax in, unless you are feeling extra generous and want to invite a partner or friend as there are two treatments beds in the centre of the room – additionally there is a spa, half-bath and private rain forest shower.

The Arrival

There’s no better way to start a holiday than utterly stress-free. Vinpearl had arranged handy return shuttle transfers from Da Nang International airport to the beautiful resort (just a 15-minute trip) and it really set the mood for a grand escape.

The Resort

Vinpearl Da Nang Resort & Villas is situated on a long stretch of white sandy beach – the kind of beach you could easily wile the days away on, sipping pina coladas, and soaking up the afternoon sun. It is seriously nicer than anything we have experienced in Thailand, and although the beaches of Da Nang are fast gaining popularity, it is well and truly free from the throngs of people who descend on the overcrowded beachs of Phuket and Bali.

One of the nicest aspects about this stunning resort, purchased by Vinpearl (Vietnam’s premier resort group) from the acclaimed Raffles chain, is the beautiful symmetry of its landscaped gardens and six pools.

In the evening, it’s a spectacular site to behold; looking back at the grand façade of the classically designed resort and its glowing lights, giving you a true sense of being on holiday.

The Rooms

The rooms at Vinpearl have a real touch of luxury, complete with 46″ LCD televisions and a generous 54 square metres in size.

We stayed in both a Pool View and an Ocean View room. The Pool View room had a lovely outlook over the vast pool and was a few floors down from the Ocean View rooms. The Ocean View rooms have a stunning view of the pool as well as towards the sea, which is great if you like a quiet drink as the sun sets. Rooms are stylishly furnished with hardwood floors.

The bathrooms at Vinpearl Luxury are nothing short of exceptional – with polished marble interiors and a double basin. Below is an image of our bathroom (we were staying in the Ocean View room) – check out the views of the sea and pool.

Ocean View Upgrade

If, to you, being on holiday means treating yourself to the ultimate indulgences, then we definitely recommend going that little bit further for a whole lot more luxury. The Ocean View Upgrade offers a double step-up in upgraded rooms to the decadent Ocean View Room for two adults at Vinpearl with spectacular sea views.

If you’re travelling with family or a group of friends, your best bet is to upgrade to one of Vinpearl’s magnificent Villas – boasting a whopping 500+sqm of luxurious living space and three separate bedrooms!

The Lobby

The Lobby at Vinpearl is breathtaking – truly one of the finest we’ve ever seen. It is completely decked out with polished marble, and the service from the many staff members was impeccable. The lobby is six-star all the way – back home, we’d expect to pay a small fortune to stay amid this type of luxury.

Wine & Dine in Style

Food is a big part of any stay at Vinpearl, Da Nang, and of course Hoi An; known as the culinary capital of Vietnam.

Included in the offer is a mouthwatering buffet breakfast including a variety of Western and Asian cuisines. We chose something different each day, alternating between dumplings and noodles, to a fantastic egg station where you can select how you prefer your eggs. Try challenging the chef by coming up with different ways to have your eggs cooked!

The pastries were superb, more like a French patisserie than a standard hotel, which makes sense since Vietnam was originally a French colonial outpost.

There are two main restaurants at Vinpearl, and with this offer you’ll be lucky enough to experience the incredible delicacies at both of them (a daily lunch and dinner at the resort is included). Each serves a stunning range of cuisine including locally caught seafood, traditional Vietnamese dishes and European favourites created by the professional, published Executive Chef (and his world-class team) with more than ten years experience in five-star hotels and authentic Asian cuisine.

While Hoi An itself is famous for its food, we found we ate most meals at the resort as the food was extraordinary and prices very reasonable (especially by international western standards). We recommend gourmet dishes like the steamed snapper in lotus leaf, or lemongrass and chilli squid, Vietnamese specialties like Hoi An Noodle Soup and Pork Belly Spring Rolls, or Western comfort dishes like roasted lamb rack and chocolate ganache tart with strawberry salad.

Spa and Pampering

We couldn’t speak highly enough of the in-house spa at Vinpearl, the Vincharm Spa, which is part of Vietnam’s most prestigious day spa chain. The spa itself was pure relaxation and the treatments were excellent.

While you might find more inexpensive options in Hoi An town, we loved the elegance of the in-house spa, and it’s a lot easier than having to travel for a massage. The prices are substantially cheaper than what you’d expect to pay back home too. Included in the special package are two heavenly full body massages to share as you like; just perfect as a relaxing afternoon treat or to soothe aches after a day of shopping.

Resort Facilities

For those looking for health and fitness, the Vinpearl resort has a fully equipped gym, and boasts five modern pools, including an enormous infinity lap pool that spans the width of the resort’s façade!

There are also two large tennis courts available for hire at the resort, complete with instructors if you want to perfect your ace serve.

Visiting Hoi An Town

Vinpearl is located near the famous city of Hoi An. Known as the culinary capital of Vietnam, and it’s a must-see location if you ask us. You can catch a shuttle bus from the resort to Hoi An (surcharges apply and it takes about 30-minutes). Hoi An is famous for its food and cooking schools – we didn’t have time to take part during this trip but it’s certainly worth trying and a great way to pick up lots of fantastic foodie tips to take back home with you. There are literally hundreds of little restaurants and bars in Hoi An… far too many to visit them all, but we’d certainly suggest making at least two trips in.

Moments down the road in the Old Town of Hoi An, you can visit the markets filled with fresh local produce too.

“This place was by far the best place that we have stayed at. From the moment we were picked up at the airport it was perfect. We had an upgrade to an ocean view suite which was unreal. The room was huge with everything available at the touch of a button. The bathroom had a view over the balcony which was great. The pools were spectacular and you never had a problem finding a spot to relax. Sitting at poolside bar I can honestly say that when looking down the beach we agreed that this is where they get those shots that you see in magazines but rarely in reality. The pools are magnificent – all tiled in blue tiles and the beach is kept clean daily. Breakfast and dinner was included in our package and the food was very good. I would recommend that you dine at the Oriental Restaurant for it’s ambiance and great service. There is plenty to do in the resort with daily activities such as yoga, cooking classes, lantern making and the day spa. Also a shuttle bus to Hoi An leaves and returns regularly during the day so that you can enjoy sight seeing, great shopping and food in this quaint little town. All the staff were friendly and so helpful. They all provided exceptional service and made sure we felt very welcome. We have referred this resort to friends and would love to go back again ourselves.”

The Resort

Nestled against the golden shores of a 14 kilometre stretch of pure beachfront overlooking the sparkling waters of the Coral Sea, Castaways Resort & Spa Mission Beach provides welcoming accommodation in an idyllic tropical setting.

Upon arriving at Castaways, we were mesmerised with the resort’s premier location – standing just a few sandy footsteps away from a palm-fringed beach with the Family Islands and Dunk Island drifting in the background.

The Rooms

Eager to explore our new surroundings, we didn’t waste any time checking-in and getting to our rooms. Our Beachfront Resort Room was inviting and well-appointed with plush bedding, air-conditioned interiors and an ensuite bathroom. A large flat-screen TV with Foxtel sports channels, mini-fridge, tea and coffee-making facilities and free Wi-Fi access made for nice additional touches.

We were particularly enamoured with our private balcony which granted breathtaking elevated views across the Coral Sea.

Dining

Our days at Castaways began in quintessential tropical style at the on-site Bibesia Restaurant & Cocktail Bar where we indulged in delicious continental buffet breakfasts each morning of our stay.

We also dined at the in-house eatery once the sun had slipped below the horizon, sampling from their tantalising dinner menu featuring seasonal dishes made with the finest locally-sourced produce.

Facilities

In addition to the Bibesia Restaurant, Castaways is home to an engaging array of on-site facilities. The luxurious Drift Day Spa promised uncompromised pampering and didn’t disappoint! The spa is fully equipped with three treatment rooms, a relaxed reception lounge, as well as a health and healing library. The handy tours and activities booking desk also had our day-trips all sorted, while the fitness centre ensured we felt no residual guilt from over-indulging at dinnertime.

Perhaps our favourite feature was encompassed by Castaways’ stunning pair of beachfront swimming pools – the perfect place to embrace the Far-North Queensland Sunshine and enjoy a refreshing drink by the poolside.

Activities

When not relaxing by the beach or unwinding amid the resort’s comfortable premises, we explored the tropical playground surrounding us with relish.

We couldn’t visit Mission Beach without setting aside a day to experience the wonder of the Great Barrier Reef, so we embarked on a fun-filled cruise adventure with the friendly team from Mission Beach Dive! Our travelling troupe clambered onto the luxurious Reef Goddess and set off for the world’s most famous reef for an afternoon of snorkeling complete with a delicious BBQ seafood lunch.

We also enjoyed a water-based journey of a different kind with the friendly team from Croc and Wildlife Tours. Our tour group drifted along the calm waterways of the Hull River – home to a vibrant eco-system teeming with native birds, mud crabs and of course those calculating saltwater crocodiles!

There’s always time for a little indulgence, so we didn’t hesitate to book a chocolate farm tour with Charley’s Chocolate Factory.

We learnt about the chocolate making process from the orchard to the dessert tray and even managed to taste the profits …Yum!

There are few more romantic places than Paronella Park – a rambling 1930s Spanish castle with lush lawns made for enjoying an afternoon picnic with someone special. The historic architecture and dramatic nearby waterfall makes you feel as though you’ve been transported to another era.

As our Mission Beach trip came to a reluctant end, our Travel Team agreed that we certainly wouldn’t mind being shipwrecked … if it meant we could stay at Castaways just a little longer!

We also indulged in the star treatment by upgrading to a Celebrity Suite – boasting a mind-blowing 130sqm floor-plan and even a private swimming pool!

Of course for the ultimate indulgence, adults-only upgrades are also available for a spectacular Private Pool Villa with more than 350sqm of living space (the biggest villas in Seminyak!) in addition to a private pool and a round-the-clock personal butler to ensure you don’t have to lift a finger during your tropical holiday.

Dining

The five-star style doesn’t end there, with The Trans Resort Bali hosting a mouth-watering in-house dining venue known simply as The Restaurant.

Our Travel team enjoyed fully-loaded daily ‘Celebration’ breakfasts and even indulged in a decadent multi-course Indonesian Degustation Dining Experience which we consider an absolute highlight of our stay.

Off-site delights also lay in wait at the acclaimed Mama San restaurant (the culinary domain of award-winning international chef, Will Meyrick) where we sat down for a multi-course crowd-pleaser of a lunch that left us all utterly satisfied.

Facilities

The resort is also home to a fabulous collection of on-site facilities.

Feel free to start burning off those holiday calories at the well-equipped 24-hour gymnasium (…not that our group spent much time working out!).

We particularly loved the central swimming pool, complete with a dramatic tiered waterfall and even a man-made beach with powder-fine sands sourced from Australia’s famous Whitsunday region.

The super-chic Trans Club is a great spot to unwind with dramatic glass walls, designer furnishings and a sophisticated ambiance laying in wait! (Only-available to guests staying in high category rooms.)

We found some time to relax with a couple of exotic spa treatments to enjoy at the beautifully-furnished Spa Villa. We had our choice of a soothing foot reflexology session or neck and shoulder massage – two treatments that we can highly recommend.

We also let off some steam in the super-sized steam room… jealous yet?

We felt appropriately spoiled during our utterly unique 90-minute Egyptian Wine Bath and Massage  (think of a spa bath with the added luxury of antioxidant-enriched fragrant wine being poured all over your skin!) – we guarantee, you’ll feel like Egyptian royalty and it’ll leave your skin feeling baby-soft!

Speaking of kids, there’s plenty of fun for the little ones to enjoy as well with The Trans Kids Club offering an arts and crafts area, ship-themed playground, Lego station and even a Baskin Robbins ice cream dispensary.

The resort also has an in-house shopping boutique so you can pick up those last-minute souvenirs and keepsakes for loved ones back home.

Out & About

The chic establishment is also close to all that Seminyak is famous for – from the clubs, bars and dining venues of the town’s main street (affectionately coined ‘Eat Street’); to the sandy shores of the beachfront. Some of the most famous locations are the Ku De Ta and Potato Head Beach Clubs, where you can hang out right throughout the day – from breakfast to sunset, and then enjoy an evening dinner and cocktails beyond!

Be sure to take advantage of the 24-hour STAR one-button service (available for all room types) and get the helpful concierge team to assist with your off-site dining and entertainment bookings.

Our stay also included unlimited access to the famous Mozaic Beach Club – a dazzling beachfront destination that was voted as Bali’s ‘Best Sunset Venue’ at the Yak Awards. With a trendy lounge, bar, fine dining restaurant and gorgeous beachfront views, the club is a great spot to while away a sunny afternoon.

Our package even entailed a bonus 20% discount on all food and beverages purchased at Mozaic, and with tantalising dishes like this killer dessert on offer, we certainly got more than our 20% worth!

The brand-new Trans Resort Bali has only just unwrapped and discarded its grand opening ribbon, but Seminyak’s newest resort is already proving to be an instant hit with Bali-bound travellers.

“Overall, the room was excellent. I was surprised to see the outdoor bathtub on the balcony, with the view straight to the pool area. Perfect spot for the honeymooners. I was in love with the bathroom amenities, especially the bath bomb! You can spend your day bathing and just relaxing with the aromatic scents from the bath bomb. It was a nice touch, really. The poolside was amazing! It sure had unique features, almost had this beachy aura. And the lifeguards were always there, so it’s really safe for your kids. Last but not least, the staff were all very nice and welcoming. I will definitely come back to this place whenever I go to Bali. Very recommended!”

It’s an absolutely beautiful hotel, brand new, has a beach area for the kids and a water slide staffed with life guards, kids club ladies are so friendly and played with our kids in the pool for hours we were really impressed as we have never received service of this standard from any hotel before. It’s in a great location in Seminyak, rooms won’t disappoint nice pool area with an amazing 4 storey vertical wall waterfall which looks incredible. The Resort

Phuket Graceland is one of the most popular destinations for Aussie travellers holidaying in Thailand, and the famous Graceland brand continues to shine with the recently-unveiled SENTIDO Graceland Resort & Spa in Kaho Lak.

Despite being a shiny new addition to the impressive Graceland line-up, SENTIDO still showcases all that the Graceland name is traditionally known for – luxury accommodation, world-class recreational facilities and standard-setting service.

Superbly situated on Thailand’s sun-drenched south-western coast and edging onto a stunning 100-metre stretch of white sandy beachfront beside the Andaman Sea, the resort is the perfect place to enjoy some Thai-inspired ‘R&R’.

Upon arriving at SENTIDO Graceland, we were struck by the property’s architectural flair – highlighting the ideal balance of chic modern design trends and traditional Thai inflections. The imposing lobby area complete with central water-feature definitely made for an unforgettable first impression.

Eager to explore the rest of the resort, we checked-in and headed off to our rooms.

The Rooms

Our Deluxe Pool View Room contained everything we could possibly want – the generously spacious 45sqm floor-plan ensured we had plenty of room, while handy mod-cons including a satellite TV, air-conditioned interiors, a jam-packed mini-bar and Wi-Fi access kept us suitably comfortable and entertained.

We also took the opportunity to spend a few nights in one of SENTIDO Graceland’s gorgeous Deluxe Pool Access Rooms, which offer all the amenities of our original room type but with the added bonus of a private patio that descends straight into one of the resort’s two swimming pools.

The ensuite bathroom was also beautifully-appointed and featured an oversized mirror, double vanity and a romantic rain-shower – great for couples enjoying a romantic escape!

Dining

Guests are certainly spoilt for choice with SENTIDO Graceland’s diverse range of in-house dining options. You can take your pick from five restaurants and bars that are sure to have a meal and beverage to suit any palate.

Our mornings usually began at the resort’s signature Pakarang Restaurant where our Travel Team fuelled up for fun-filled days with a decadent buffet breakfast brimming with Asian and Western favourites – from eggs and toast to fresh fruit and everything in between.

We also enjoyed evenings of fine dining at the lagoon-facing Pla2 Restaurant, which serves up satiating Thai-fusion cuisine in a relaxed tropical ambiance.

The beguiling dining venue set the scene for a decadent ‘Taste of Thailand’ dining experience which shone the spotlight on regional cuisine including green chicken curry, massaman beef curry, fresh seafood, and flavour-packed stir-fry dishes.

Sukko Spa

Indulgence of a different sort awaited us at SENTIDO Graceland’s on-site Sukko Spa. The lavish establishment provides a range of soothing treatments administered by spa professionals across two levels bedecked in calming neutral tones with subtle Thai décor accents.

Subdued lighting, silk-draped massage beds and first-class facilities including couples’ treatment rooms, a huge Jacuzzi and steam room leave visitors with no choice but to completely relax and unwind.

Sukko offers a comprehensive array of treatments such as traditional Thai massages, soothing aromatherapy sessions, age-defying facials and much more. After spending some time at Sukko Spa, you’ll be feeling relaxed, refreshed and reinvigorated!

Other guest facilities you’ll find on-site here at SENTIDO Graceland comprise two breathtaking swimming pools, two tennis courts and a pair of squash courts (that’s just the tip of the iceberg).

The expansive pools ranked among our favourite hangout spots. Exuding an exotic ‘Indiana Jones adventure’ vibe, the gleaming cobalt waters are peppered with traditional Thai sculptures and charming paddle boats complete with tireless crew.

Health fanatics can get their daily workout fix at the fully-equipped fitness centre, while the rest of us may choose to visit just to work-off those deliciously calorific holiday meals.

We also enjoyed some ten-pin fun at the resort’s very own bowling alley – a great way to keep the kids (both big and small) blissfully occupied.

Speaking of kids, families are sure to love SENTIDO Graceland’s on-site kids club. Housed in a cutesy boat-inspired building near the central lagoon, the kids club provides endless entertainment for the little ones while mum and dad take the chance to enjoy a well-deserved time-out.

Also, feel free to wander down to the postcard-worthy beachfront and take part in a range of water-sports, from kayaking to snorkelling – or simply pull up a sun-lounger and work on your holiday tan!

Out and About

The picturesque playground of Khao Lak is laid out before you! Take some time to wander through the stunning natural surrounds of the Phang Nga National Parks, visit the heavenly Chong Fah waterfalls, or play a game of golf at the nearby Blue Canyon Country Club – you can do it all.

“My family and I stayed at this lovely hotel during the first two weeks of August. The hotel is beautiful and set amongst lovely grounds on the sea front. The staff were the most friendly and hospitable people you would wish to come across. The rooms were lovely and cleaned to a high standard every day and the breakfast was plentiful with a good choice. There are 3 restaurants in the hotel which were lovely. There are 3 beach bars where we often stopped for a drink and received a friendly welcome. It was our first time in Thailand but it definitely won’t be our last. We would definitely recommend this hotel, it is away from all the hustle and bustle but if this is the sort of holiday you enjoy then I would definitely recommend.”

The breakfast buffet is more than adequate and the surrounds at night have that wonderful romantic touch with many fairy lights in the trees. I had had contact with the hotel via email and they were accommodating and helpful with timely responses. I find it impossible to fault them with anything. Our stay was for pure relaxation and pleasure and we did not have a need to leave the resort to explore further.”

The Resort

Serving as one of Western Australia’s pre-eminent accommodation establishments, the five-star Pearle on Cable Beach provides luxurious lodgings and fantastic service just a short stroll away from the white sands crystal clear waters of Broome’s famous Cable Beach.

Proof of the resort’s popularity and benchmark service is underscored by three consecutive TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence awarded in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The impressive property is a plush modern oasis with spacious guest rooms and opulent villas showcasing attractive designs and plush amenities that work in tandem with a calming neutral colour scheme.

At the heart of the boutique establishment sits a stunning 25-metre infinity edge swimming pool – an ideal place to unwind and soak up some sun.

Eager to start relaxing by the poolside, our Travel Team checked-in and made haste for our room.

The Room

Our Pearle Guest Room beckoned us – an inviting haven adorned with chic modern furnishings and generously-sized interiors.

The king-size bed was wickedly soft and provided restful nights that left us recharged to tackle action-packed days, while the huge ensuite bathroom housed a romantic walk-in rain shower (perfect for couples). An LCD TV with complimentary Foxtel channels, air-conditioning, and a cosy balcony complete with coffee table and chairs put the finishing touches on the room. As an indulgent bonus, we also received a complimentary Mount Romance Relaxation Kit chock-full of pure sandalwood oil products locally-sourced from the Kimberley Region.

Aside from the alluring central pool, The Pearle of Cable Beach also boasts an engaging range of on-site guest facilities including a handy tour desk, well-stocked gift shop and tempting café.

The latter is where we enjoyed delicious daily continental breakfasts – the buffet selection presented us with a wide range of tantalising options that enticed us to get out of bed nice and early each morning of our stay. The pastry section in particular was a hit with our travelling troupe (can you blame us? Just look at those decadently flaky croissants!).

Further enhancing the property’s laidback ambiance, guests are encouraged to unwind at the in-house Pearle Day Spa – offering a comprehensive selection of soothing treatments from youth-restoring facials, to hot stone massages and everything in between. The spa is also equipped with premium Pevonia products – sure to leave you looking and feeling your very best!

Activities

Cable Beach is one of Broome’s main drawcards and with scenery like this, it’s no surprise. The 22 kilometre stretch of white sandy heaven lures travellers in search of beachside relaxation from across the globe.

If you’ve read about Broome in glossy travel magazines or received postcards from holidaying friends, chances are you’ve seen images of camels loping along the shores of Cable Beach. It’s an activity that has become so ingrained with Broome’s tourism industry that it’s considered as synonymous as the town’s storied pearling links.

Having saddled up for a morning ride with the team from Red Sun Camels, we can confirm that this is something you not only need to add to your bucket-list but tick it off as soon as possible. Our group had an absolute ball petting and riding our furry humpback chariots, and watching the sun slowly creep above the Indian Ocean while painting the clouds with licks of orange and gold is an unforgettable experience.

You simply can’t visit Broome without getting caught up in the romance of the town’s pearl-diving history, so we embarked on an amazing four-hour pearl farm expedition with Willie Creek Pearl Farm Tours.

Our knowledgeable guides revealed the hidden secrets of the modern pearling trade and showed us how these rare and precious natural wonders are cultivated – recounting the journey from seabed to jewellery store window. With return coach transfers, morning tea and a leisurely boat cruise; our tour made for a fun day out.

We also caught the latest flick screening at the world’s oldest open-air garden cinema still in operation according to Guinness Book of World Records – the Sun Pictures theatre in Chinatown. The historic cinema dates back to 1916, and while movies were once viewed via 35mm projectors, the theatre now boasts the finest digital screening technology.

Broome’s scintillating weather is the perfect match for a cold glass of beer, and there’s no better place to sample the local brew than at Matso’s Broome Brewery. An extensive range of distinctly unique handcrafted beers and ciders will ensure Matso’s earns a place in your heart – we particularly loved the aptly named ‘Pearler’s Pale Ale’ and their Mango beer is a must-try!

Broome is a beautiful beach town of many delights and we’ll definitely be back to indulge in its rich history, scenic natural splendour and luxurious surrounds very soon! This place is truly one of Australia’s most precious hidden treasures…

“We have visited Broome many times over the past 16 years and this is our first stay at The Pearle resort. It is far and away the best, most luxurious and relaxing accommodation in which we have stayed. We stayed for seven days in a spacious pavilion with well-appointed kitchen, private pool, bbq, laundry, comfortable internal and external seating/dining areas. The bathroom was clean and modern with lots of space. The private pool was a delight especially after coming back from the beach. Upon entering the lobby area, we were immediately struck by the resort’s daring architectural designs and bold modern décor accents. Setting the benchmark Le Méridien luxury aside, this resort is unlike anything you’ll have ever experienced before. Super chic and en-trend in every way, Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran will leave you utterly spellbound.

The Rooms

The Jimbaran establishment comprises 118 sophisticated guestrooms suites and villas that showcase spacious interiors, stylish designs and plush furnishings.

Bedecked in soothing shades of aqua, our lavish Lagoon View Room served as a welcoming haven. With a 62sqm floor-plan, there’s plenty of space and comfort for the most discerning of travellers. The king-size bed provided the perfect night’s sleep, while handy mod-cons including a 42-inch SMART 3D LED TV and fully-stocked refreshment centre made for nice additional touches.  The dramatic floor-to-ceiling window panel that opens up onto a private terrace complete with outdoor setting overlooking the pool was perhaps our favourite feature of the room.

A stylish ensuite bathroom adorned with glamorous marble fittings and romantic rain shower completes the picture.

Our Travel Team also took the opportunity to spend a few nights in an Aqua Studio Suite Lagoon View Room, as well as a luxurious Lagoon Access Room, which features all the amenities of a Lagoon View Room but with the added extravagance of allowing guests to jump straight into the gorgeous lagoon pool right from your private terrace.

Dining

Dining at Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran is an experience in its own right with five diverse restaurants and bars to choose from.

We greeted each new day with a flavour-packed breakfast at the resort’s signature eatery, the Bamboo Chic Restaurant. Their fully-cooked breakfast buffet features an extensive selection of Asian and Western favourites including fresh fruits, flaky pastries, granola, yoghurt, and local dishes like Balinese Tartine, Duck Betutu, and Beef Rendang poached eggs.

We particularly loved their energising fruit-infused booster shots – a tasty treat that will leave you ready to take on action-packed days with ease!

Aside from the delicious daily buffet brekkies, Bamboo Chic serves satiating Pan-Asian cuisine for lunch and dinner, showcasing Jimbaran’s iconic seafood dishes.

We also indulged in some of Le Méridien’s famous Parisian éclairs – crisped to golden-brown perfection and featuring irresistible locally-inspired flavours like pandan mangosteen and raspberry/rosella-flower. Take our word for it; you won’t be able to have just one…

The unique Smoqee Sky Bar became one of our favourite hang-out spots, offering breathtaking elevated views of the resort and engaging live entertainment – from cultural dance displays to catchy DJ beats.

We enjoyed some unique dining experiences at Smoqee including a mouth-watering Balinese share-style dinner, a Jimbaran Seafood BBQ extravaganza and even a Rome-inspired pizza dinner with wine.

The bar’s effortlessly cool rooftop makes for a great place to unwind with tempting tapas-style dishes and cocktails with plenty of kick.

Another must-try in-house eatery is simply known as WaLa – a charming ice-cream parlour that dispenses designer-brand illy Coffee by the mugful, as well as creamy Italian gelato that’s simply to-die-for and acts as the perfect counter-weapon for those steamy Balinese afternoons.

Facilities

The resort is also home to a comprehensive range of on-site facilities including the incredible central saltwater lagoon swimming pool – great for a refreshing dip and an enviable place to unwind in a sun-lounger.

The Shinee Retail Shop stocks everything from designer threads and fine jewellery, to casual beachwear and holiday souvenirs; while a fully-equipped 24-hour fitness centre is available for guests who just can’t bear to break their regular workout routines.

Those looking for pure relaxation are sure to enjoy Le Méridien’s in-house Serenity Spa & Salon – regarded as one of Bali’s finest spas.  We experienced some of their rejuvenating treatments including a soothing Balinese massage that made us feel totally pampered from head-to-toe.

Guests travelling with children are certain to make use of the resort’s convenient J Kids Club – the little ones will enjoy fun-filled days featuring engaging cultural education programs and exciting indoor/outdoor activities.

“Once in a Lifetime Experience”

“This was one of the best holidays of my life, thanks to Le Meridien. I came here with one of my friends and we both had the most amazing time. The staff were exceptional and would stop at nothing to assist any need that we had. There was a lot to do as well, close walk to Jimbaran Bay Beach and restaurants along the beach. We went up to the rooftop bar for drinks for a few nights during our week long stay. The drinks were of superb quality, the atmosphere was amazing and we really enjoyed listening to the live entertainment that was provided. The pool was clean and it was a pleasant surprise to see pretty little frangipani flowers occasionally when swimming. Housekeeping came twice a day to make sure the room was clean and they were always thorough. It was a five minute walk to general shops, restaurants, spa and nail services. Overall I could not recommend this hotel more, there was so much selection for breakfast I didn’t know what to choose first, and all of it was of exceptional quality. They also had chefs on hand making whatever omelette I wanted which was nice. The gym is quiet and equipment is all new. I absolutely loved staying here and I will definitely be back in the future for one of their awesome pina coladas, fresh young coconuts and massages by the pool.”

The Destination

Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands are famous across the globe for their tranquil atmosphere, tropical climate and irresistible beaches.

Ensconced within the pacific beauty of the Mamanuca archipelago just off the coast of Denarau and lying approximately 17 kilometres north-west of Nadi, Treasure Island Resort is one of the region’s most popular private island retreats.

Treasure Island is accessible via a 25-minute speed-boat ride from the Vuda Marina (which is about 15-minutes’ drive from Nadi International Airport) – transfers were included in our package, so our getaway was underway with no fuss and soon enough, we were docking at our very own island oasis!

Facilities

When not relaxing in the comfort of our Bure, our Travel Team took to exploring the island paradise surrounding us.

On any given afternoon, you could find our motley crew members lazing on the champagne sands of the beach, hitting the waves for some water-sports fun (additional costs apply), or immersing ourselves in the local culture with complimentary Fijian cooking demonstrations, dance shows and traditional ceremonies like the famed Kava sharing ritual.

The resort’s facilities are also top-notch and include a stunning three-tiered swimming pool that looks out across the ocean waves.

The in-house spa is also available for those looking to indulge in some tropical pampering during your island escape, while other features include a fun-filled kids club, shopping boutique, cocktail bar and much more.

Dining

Despite being marooned on a tropical island, guests at this resort certainly don’t have to starve like castaways! Dining at Treasure Island presents visitors with moments to savour at any time of the day.

We began our mornings with delicious full buffet breakfasts at the in-house Elevuka Restaurant, before snacking on a tasty daily serving of afternoon tea with sinfully-good freshly-baked cookies.

By night, we enjoyed themed buffet-style dinners showcasing an appetising array of European, Asian and local cuisine with everything from traditional Fijian Lovo feasts (cooked on hot stones underground), to succulent barbecued seafood and so much more!

The tan will fade but the memories will stay with me forever. Treasure Island is one of those places where you can switch off to the outside world and relax. We stayed for two weeks which probably gave us a different holiday to those who do the “island hopping” – we settled into our routine with ease and really soaked up the “island time” of the resort. Everyone we encountered seemed to take great pleasure and pride in what their role was in the running of the island. I really got the feeling that there was a true family feeling with the staff. We had ample opportunities to relax as well as be active with all of the activities the island and dive shop provides. Turtle and Iguana feeding was one of my fav daily activities. Evening entertainment was great and the house band – stick around after 9pm and you’ll have a wonderful time. I would happily go back there again.”

We had 5 spectacular nights on Treasure Island in July. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel like part of the family! With Henry greeting us, making us welcome and showing us around the facilities, Tamari in the Restaurant who looked after us every day, with our special meals and cocktails! Grace the most amazing Omelette making Chef ever! Tui and Donkey who kept our son amused with T-rex and the other Iguanas! All the staff are fabulous and make you feel you at your home away from home. The singing and entertainment at night was fabulous. Irene was delightful and Turtle Mum Sophie has simply the best job in the world! We were so lucky to be there to see 10 turtles released – what a very special moment. Treasure Island is simply paradise – I left completely rested relaxed – it had to be our most amazing family holiday! The snorkelling is spectacular in crystal clear and calm waters. Congratulations to Irene and the team of wonderful staff for delivering an exceptional experience – one my family and I will never forget. We just can’t wait to get back there to experience it all again!”

Sanur also grants easy access to nearby Seminyak and Kuta, for those wishing to experience the hustle and bustle of Eat Street and the after-dark delights of the region’s thriving nightlife scene.

The Resort

Located just 25-minutes away from Bali’s international airport in Denpasar, the Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali features 120 luxurious villas and suites scattered across four acres of tropical gardens and borders along a 200 metre stretch of golden beach on Bali’s stunning southeast coast.

The resort is part of the renowned Fairmont Raffles Hotels International Collection, which is globally renowned for offering only the finest luxury accommodation and first-class service. The Room

Let’s just get this out of the way nice and early – the rooms at Fairmont Sanur are absolutely ginormous and start from a whopping 90sqm!

The rooms at Fairmont are widely considered some of the most lavish in all of Bali and for good reason.

Our Fairmont Garden Suite was a heavenly slice of paradise replete with gorgeous colonial interiors, plush modern fittings and spellbinding tropical views.

A wickedly-comfy super-king bed, ensuite bathroom with rain-shower and a spacious terrace with day-bed round out the amenities nicely.

The Facilities

When not luxuriating amid the exquisite surrounds of our suite, our Travel Team lapped up the Balinese sunshine and explored the resort grounds at our leisure.

We particularly loved unwinding by the central infinity pool, as well as hitting the beach for some water-sports.

The in-house Spa is also a must-try – we indulged with a Signature Sanur 90-minute treatment including a restorative massage featuring soothing Indonesian, Thai, Swedish, Breema and Shiatsu techniques.

We also enjoyed an extra 30-minute treatment (choose between a body scrub, foot reflexology session, or back and shoulder massage) – because there’s no such thing as too many spa treatments!

The resort also offers a well-equipped gym and bike hire facilities – fabulous for those fitness-focussed travellers.

Children will also find paradise at Fairmont Sanur Beach, with an action-packed kids club at the ready.

Dining

Dining at Fairmont Sanur is simply a delight, with two signature in-house restaurants to choose from.

We enjoyed scrumptious daily breakfasts at the acclaimed Layang Layang restaurant – famous for serving up authentic Balinese cuisine and international buffet-style favourites.

We also indulged in two decadent three-course dinners – a traditional Balinese banquet at Layang Layang, plus a poolside dinner at the Nyala Beach Club & Grill.

Just some of the mouth-watering dishes included the likes of classic local delicacies such as fresh BBQ seafood and rich beef rendang, followed by crème brûlée with a sweet Balinese pandan twist.

Western delights are also ready to tempt your tastebuds with options like chili crab, roasted organic baby chicken and lemon parfait.

Guest also have the chance to participate in a structured Balinese cooking class under the guidance of an experience resident chef. Enjoy a bike ride to a local market to pick up the freshest regional produce, then return to the resort to cook up a storm and dine on your creations for lunch.

Guests choosing to upgrade to a third floor suite will also enjoy a champagne brunch served on your balcony with freshly-baked pastries, fruit and refreshing sorbet.

If you want a place where all the staff know and use your name, love playing with your 2 1/2 year old toddler, offer great food and ultra-healthy breakfast juices, has direct beachfront access (no road to cross), with a 5k beachfront footpath at your front door, a perfectly appointed suite, an outdoor living space in your suite bigger than most hotel rooms, in fact a bathroom bigger then many hotel rooms, a superb kids club with a range of organised activities, a day spa that’s so popular and will leave you so relaxed its worth booking in advance, a personal butler to make any reservations you want, an infinity edge pool overlooking the beautiful blue sea which is spotted with all types of boats and the occasional kite surfer. We found the The Fairmont Sanur to be 5 star luxurious pleasure. This is by far one of the nicest Fairmont properties that we have been to in the world! It is beautiful by all standards- staff are amazing and friendly, our pool villa was fantastic – huge, all amenities were top, fridge was well stocked and fresh fruit every day, breakfast was incredible with lots of fresh choices and get Balinese dishes to try! The gym and spa are really worth trying, especially the wonderful massage at the spa! Close to the beach where you can go for lunch and close to town for dinner and to see the village in action. A special mention to Yenny , the assistant villa manager who was so kind to us and very gracious. Well done Fairmont!!”

We enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner daily as part of our stay. “My husband, son and I stayed here in early August and really enjoyed our stay. The grounds of the hotel are simply beautiful and lovely for a wander through, day or night. We spent each day chilling out at the pool, which seemed to offer something for everyone – slide, shallow areas, swimming areas etc. We liked the hotel’s policy of removing towels people had abandoned for longer than 20 minutes, as it was always easy to get a lounger. Our room was a good size, with a nice balcony. It was clean and fresh and the bed was large and extremely comfortable.
