As Australians, we often take for granted our luck at being so close to Asia. We flock to Bali and Thailand by the plane-load, sometimes forgetting the road slightly less travelled and the beautiful beaches a lot less trampled. So let us introduce you to the beach capital of Nha Trang – a shining turquoise jewel in the crown of Vietnam, and a vibrant alternative to the usual seaside destinations.
We decided to take a trip and explore it for ourselves. What we found was a little slice of South East Asian heaven served with a side of glistening coastline, exotic cuisine, some of the world’s best snorkelling, vibrant culture, relaxed nightlife, endless entertainment and five star luxury to rival some of the best we’ve ever experienced.
First stop? The spectacular five star Sunrise Nha Trang right on the beach for an indulgent six night experience.
With budding excitement and visions of tropical paradise buzzing through our minds, we eagerly made our way to the Sunrise Nha Trang. As we approached and our vehicle came to a hault, we were awestruck by the majestic facade of the colonial-inspired structure. The combination of the stunning exterior, the sparkling seaside location , and the knowledge that we were just steps from some of the city’s most popular attractions, shopping and nightlife, was truly intoxicating.
Enveloped in elegant glamour on all sides, a charming porter assisted us with our luggage and led us through the lobby, which is itself was glamorously decked out with striking pillars, crisp white walls and massively high ceilings. When kindly handed to the care of the lovely receptionist, we were effortlessly checked in and given the official stamp of approval to begin our holiday ie. room keys!
After being courteously shown to our rooms, our eyes were immediately drawn to the glittering bits of blue out on the horizon. Having booked the Superior Seaview Room, the presence of the stunning ocean was not a surprise, but none the less, in conjunction with our extremely romantic room, it was breathtaking.
The elegant room, adorned in soft pastels, was extremely inviting – our favourite features included the plush king sized bed (flower petals and all) as well as the incredibly spacious private balcony which offered a towering view over the marvelous Roman pool and glittering beachside.
We also tried out the even more luxurious Sunrise Club Suites for a couple of nights. It boasted even more space amidst stunningly decor- it was a veritable slice of paradise that we were happy to call home (even if only temporarily!).
As the circular focal point of the Sunrise, luxuriating by the pool landed us right in the heart of the action. As if peeling back centuries, we found ourselves feeling like Roman Gods and Goddesses lounging about in all their glory.
In true Roman bathhouse style, the pool lured guests out from the comfort of their lovely rooms, thereby creating an exciting and vibrant pool side atmosphere (the bar and its tropical cocktails may have helped as well!)
At the Sunrise Nha Trang, there is no shortage to dining options. From a casual snack to fine dining and all the shades in between, you will not be hard pressed for choice. Across the board however (and in true five-star style), you can be assured that the passionate chefs use only the freshest and highest quality ingredients in order to deliver mouthfuls of delicious flavour.
The Romanesque Imperial Restaurant offers both stylish indoor/outdoor dining and specialize in a combination of traditional Vietnamese dishes as well as Western style-cuisine. Nestled by the striking white pillar, with a table we dubbed ‘ours’, the Imperial is where we enjoyed our delicious buffet breakfasts and exotic a la carte dinners.
The Hanabusa Restaurant is quite unique in Nha Trang as it offers guests a chance to enjoy incredibly delicious traditional Japanese cuisine. We ordered up a storm and proceeded to sampled mouth-watering sushi and sashimi while sipping on cold Sake.
Just a stone’s throw from the Sunrise pool, you’ll find the beautiful beachfront with its incredible water-front seating. We’re talking super comfortable cushions, thatched umbrellas and an unrivaled view onto the turquoise waters of Nha Trang Bay.
Grab a seat, read a book, sip a cocktail, cool off in the water and repeat as necessary.
After a morning of intermittent poolside and beachfront lounging, we felt ready for an indulgent relaxation session at the award-wining spa. With an array of services on offer, we kicked off our session with an invigorating facial followed by an aromatic full body relaxation massage and finished off with a divine sauna and steam bath. Pure bliss.
When the clock strikes 5, two exciting layers of entertainment are added to the Sunrise mix – the Sky Lounge and Jolly Leprechaun Irish Bar.
The Sky Lounge and its gorgeous arched windows, offers an extremely elegant environment – we enjoyed expertly made tropical cocktails while simultaneously taking-in the panoramic view of the majestic bay and a dazzling sunset.
To compliment our consumption of fruity cocktails, we headed to the in-house Irish Pub for a hearty Guinness. As a social hub, we made many friends at Leprauchaun’s and will proudly boast that there’s nothing quite like bonding over delicious beer and live music (especially while vacationing in a tropical paradise!).
Stopover – Hotel Equatorial Ho Chi Minh City
Staying in one five star hotel is great, but two five star hotels is just grand. Vietnam has a lot to offer, so we also spent two days in the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City at the fabulous Hotel Equatorial.
The rooms at Hotel Equatorial are tasteful and well appointed with a comfortable 32sqm of space to unwind in.You can sink into the lush King bed (or you can get two Twin beds) like we did, turn on the air-con, switch on the satellite TV from your bedside control and take some time out between sightseeing in the ultimate comfort.
Hotel Equatorial also has an open-air swimming pool gymnasium, and even a spa which offers massages and facial treatments.
We also indulged our senses at the Orientica Seafood Restaurant & Bar. It’s tucked away on the second floor of the hotel where you can enjoy the sight, sound and smell of your seafood dinner being prepared before you with fire, steam or ice. It’s fine dining with a twist, and fresh seafood straight up in Vietnamese style. The restaurant was reviewed and selected in Vietnam’s Top 100 Restaurants by Gourmet Vietnam and is definitely worth a try while you’re in Ho Chi Minh City.
Perfectly positioned just out of the hectic city centre, but close enough to experience the bustling buzz of Ho Chi Minh; Hotel Equatorial provides perfect access to all the sights and attractions including a taste of history at the famous Cu Chi Tunnels and War Museum, or a visit to the thriving commercial sector with fantastic markets and a wealth of chic bars and restaurants.

The best thing about our stay at the Remada hotel was the staff and the worst thing was we could not stay longer.(Sunrise Nha Trang)

Could not fault this hotel. The facilities and staff were first class, especially Trang in the ground floor coffee shop and the pool attendant whose name I can’t remember. We stayed in a spa suite on the top floor with two Jacuzzis one in the bathroom and one on the balcony. There was also a sauna in the bathroom, which remained unused, as standing outside for ten minutes in Nah Trang in mid May is like being in a sauna anyway. The breakfast was absolutely phenomenal, the choice was extensive, everything covered European and Asian. Dont forget to ask for the fresh orange to be delivered to your table, its fantastic. Truly a five star establishment and five star staff. If you are going to Nha Trang treat yourself to some sheer opulence, you will not be disappointed. My wife had a facial in the Spa and said it was the best she has ever had (Sunrise Nha Trang)
