This is the Cheapest Time to Book a Holiday
We all have that friend who manages to score the best last-minute flights and incredible accommodation, only for us to struggle even when we’re planning months and months in advance. Why is that? Well, that’s what we’ve set out to uncover.
No matter where you’re dreaming of for your next holiday, once you’ve read this, you’ll know how to book the best getaways for the best prices!
So, without further ado, this is the cheapest time to book a holiday…
It’s Australia’s favourite overseas destination (especially for last-minute breaks to escape winter!) but there are still plenty of savings to be had by booking ahead. According to flight search engine Kayak.com.au, booking three and a half months in advance can save you up to 15% on flights. As for the cheapest month to travel? Well, you better get booking, because it’s just a couple of months away - November!
Bali’s tourism peak is June to August and over the Christmas and New Year period, so if you want to save some cash for cocktails, avoid these months.
If you’re planning on exploring the vibrant capital of Bangkok, Kayak says you’ll find the cheapest flights just one month before your trip, saving up to 15% on airfares, with the most affordable month being October.
For those seeking a relaxing beachside escape to Phuket, you could save up to a massive 35% on flights by booking four and a half months in advance, with the best savings in August.
Keep in mind that Phuket’s peak season is from November to February (November to March for Bangkok), so try to avoid this period.
Let’s face it, Europe is always going to be expensive. With our dollar the way it is and how far away we are from the land of croissants, schnitzels and spaghetti, chances of getting a return flight for less than $1,000 are slim to none.
That being said, Kayak claims you could save up to 12% on flight to London by booking four and a half months in advance, with November being the cheapest month.
High season (a.k.a. that time of year when your Facebook feed is full of friends relaxing in the Italian Riviera) is from June to September. Booking outside of this time will also save you some dough.
Craving gyoza, sashimi, takoyaki and sake? The Land of the Rising Sun puts your local Japanese restaurant to shame. To experience it for yourself with savings of up to 14%, Kayak recommend booking three and a half months in advance. Like Europe and Bali, November is the cheapest month to travel to Japan.
Cherry blossom season (usually from late March to mid-April, if not earlier or later) is by far the most popular (and expensive) time to visit Japan, with locals and tourists alike flocking to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other major cities to witness the magical blooms. Likewise, Golden Week (a cluster of national holidays in late April/early May) is a busy time for locals travelling domestically, so avoid these times if you can.
…To the USA
Heading to glitzy LA? You can afford to be a little impulsive, with Kayak finding it’s cheapest to book flights just two months in advance. November is also the cheapest time to visit, so why not get planning now? 😉
Try to avoid the States between June and August, as this is peak season for both international and domestic travellers thanks to summer and the school holidays. On the other hand, November through March (excluding Christmas and New Years, and depending on where you go) is generally considered the quietest.
…To New Zealand
Fancy popping over the Tasman to visit our Kiwi neighbours? Kayak claims booking flights to Auckland one month in advance will yield the best savings - up to 21% off, to be exact - with May being the cheapest month to visit.
Summer is when New Zealand is at its most beautiful, so it makes sense that it’s also the busiest period. If you want to avoid the crowds (and the cost) but still experience the country’s natural beauty, autumn is a fantastic alternative.
If you’re looking to explore our beautiful country for less, Kayak recommends booking flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hobart one month in advance, Gold Coast one week in advance, Cairns six weeks in advance, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra two weeks in advance and the Sunshine Coast at the last minute.
